Tunisia: Faced with the risk of floods, the state muscle its preparations before the rainy season

As part of the preparing early for the rainy season and the prevention of flood risks, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources and Maritime Fisheries, responsible for water resources, Hammadi Habibchaired this Thursday, September 18, 2025 a work session devoted to the evaluation of the level of preparation and the implementation of the measures necessary to deal with any floods.

The meeting brought together the presidents-directors of the central administrations, the regional agricultural development commissioners as well as a set of executives from the various structures concerned.

During this session, The Secretary of State underlined the need to strengthen the state of preparation of the various structures concerned and ensure a rigorous coordination between all parties at central and regional levels to guarantee the effectiveness of preventive interventions.

He notably called to:

  • Mobilize all required logistics resources within administrative services to deal with any urgency.
  • Complete and follow maintenance work In progress on dams, hill lakes and hill deductions as soon as possible.
  • Ensure Continuous monitoring of rainy measurement devicesthe level of wadis and the proper functioning of measurement stations in real time.
  • Update the inventory of flood control equipment (pumps, transport machines, bulldozers, etc.), ensure their maintenance and strategic deployment so that they are operational at any time.
  • Inspect the dikes in the ground arranged on wadis, repair the previous damage and accelerate the execution of the wadis cleaning program within the fixed deadlines.
  • Accelerate repair of heavy equipment.
  • Remember the mobilizable human resources For interventions and rescue operations.

These measures aim to reduce the risk of floods, to protect citizens and infrastructure, and to ensure better reactivity in the event of a hydrological crisis during the rainy season.
