According to the Israeli channel I24News, the United States and Israel would conduct discussions with several countries, including Iran, in order to allow certain leaders of Hamas to voluntarily leave the Gaza Strip and settle abroad, Tunisia being quoted among the possible destinations.

According to the information reported by i24News, talks are underway to organize the departure of Hamas officials outside Gaza. However, the chain did not give any details on the countries involved, outside Iran, or specified if Tunis would have been consulted or given its agreement.

In parallel, the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth revealed that Anwar Attallah, member of the Gaza Municipal Council affiliated in Hamas, was able to leave the territory with his family via Jordan to Turkey, about two weeks ago, with the authorization of the Israeli security authorities.

According to the Israeli press, Israel has however rejected other requests from more officials for Hamas. Among them are:

  • Mohamed al-Madhounformer minister in the government of Hamas,
  • Ismaïl al-Achkar’s familypresident of the Foreign Affairs and Movement Commission,
  • The family of Alaa Eddine al-Battahead of a government committee attached to Hamas.

This information comes as the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, recently visited Tunis. He met his counterpart Mohamed Ali Nafti as well as President Kaïs Saïed, before held a press conference at the Iran ambassador’s residence. Araghchi did not publicly mention the question of a possible welcome from Hamas leaders by Tunisia.

Historically, the main executives of Hamas abroad are established in Qatar, Iran and Algeria. Tunisia has already been the scene of Israeli targeted operations, notably the Khalil al-Wazir assassination in 1988, said Abou Jihad, a senior OLP leader.
