The multisectoral steering committee met on Wednesday to finalize the “National strategy for road safety”aimed at making roads safer for everyone.

According to a press release from the National Road Safety Observatory, this strategy is based on global interventions affecting several essential sectors, including the legal and legislative aspect, with the revision and development of laws to strengthen deterrence and security.

It also emphasizes training and improvement in order to improve the skills of all players in the transport sector, which they belong to ministries or various institutions.

The strategy also provides investments in infrastructure and vehicles, in order to improve the condition of the roads and to ensure that vehicles, whether manufactured locally or imported, comply with security standards and are safer.

The workshops focused on five main axes: infrastructure and safe speeds, designing suitable roads and defining appropriate speed limitations; the behavior of road users, via the awareness and modification of risk behaviors of drivers and pedestrians; the development and promotion of safe public transport; strengthening the control of vehicle safety standards; And finally, post-accident management, to improve the speed and efficiency of interventions and save lives.

The press release stresses that this national strategy, which takes into account all the actors involved, pursues an ambitious objective: to reduce the number of victims of road accidents by 50 % by 2034.
