Bizerte’s beaches are preparing to regain their yesteryear splendor. L’Littoral protection and development agency (APAL) Launches a vast renovation and protection project that will spread over 28 months. The objective is to restore 7 kilometers of coastline, strongly affected by erosion.

A long -term vision, according to Mehdi Belhaj, director of Apal

In a declaration to the agency Tap,, Mehdi BelhajManaging Director responsible for administrative affairs at APAL, explained that this project has a double mission: Protect the infrastructure and roads of the region while restoring the beauty of the beacheswhich have been strongly degraded by erosion. This project, at a total cost of 60 million dinarsis funded 25 % by APAL and 75 % by German donations via the German Development Bank.

The main interventions include:

  • Construction of rocky structures : Creation of three new rocky points of 1,600 meters in total, and completion of a rocky barrier of 590 meters.
  • Strengthening the dunes : Consolidation of existing dunes, in particular near the commercial port, for increased natural protection.
  • Safety improvement : Installation of navigation signals for new points.
  • Sand intake : A second phase is planned to bail out the beaches with sand extracted from the seabed.

Inspired by the success of projects similar to RAFRAF, Slimane and Sousse, this APAL initiative promises not only to protect the local environment but also from revitalizing tourism and the economy of the Bizerte region.
