Tunisia: the federation of secondary education increases the tone

The General Federation of Secondary Education reaffirmed, this Friday, its determination to defend the union rights and the achievements of teachers. Faced with what she describes as policies of exclusion and indifference to ministries of guardianship, she announces a series of protest movements.

In a press release made public and relayed by the TAP agency, the Federation denounced the attitude of the Ministries of Education and Youth and Sports, which it accuses of being responsible for the tensions and the confusion that marked the start of the school year. She believes that dialogue, so far, must now become an essential obligation.

Measures announced

The union center calls on teachers and their regional structures to apply the decisions of the sectoral administrative committee without reservation. Among these actions, the organization of Sits-in in the different regions, the categorical refusal to ensure overtime, the boycott of discussions relating to the appointment of directors and principals.

Let us recall that primary and secondary teachers gathered, on August 28, 2025, before the headquarters of the Ministry of Education in Tunis, at the call of the general federations of basic education and secondary education, affiliated with the UGTT. They protested against the “blocking of negotiations” concerning their professional and material demands.

Strike in perspective

During this rally, a strike was mentioned and could take place on October 7, if “the ministry persists in ignoring the requests of teachers,” said Ikbal Azzabi, deputy secretary general of the General Federation of Basic Education.

For his part, Mohamed Safi, secretary general of the General Syndicate of Secondary Education, had denounced “the intransigence of the ministry” and his “constant contempt” of union demands.

The social conflict in the education sector has been bogged down for several months. Negotiations, suspended since April, have still not resumed despite the repeated requests for unions. The claims mainly relate to improving the professional and material conditions of teachers.
