Giorgio Armani dies at 91: fashion loses his king

The fashion world is in mourning. Giorgio Armani, an emblematic figure of the Italian style and founder of the Empire which bears his name, died this Thursday, September 4 at the age of 91, at his home, surrounded by his relatives. The announcement was made by the Armani group, thus confirming the disappearance of one of the most influential creators in the 20th and early 21st century.

Born in 1934 in Plaisance, Armani founded his house in 1975, revolutionizing male clothing with its unstructured costume and its minimalist approach. Its sober and elegant style quickly seduced Hollywood, red carpets and world elites. Nicknamed “Re Giorgio” – King Giorgio – he had imposed himself as an intransigent perfectionist, personally supervising all the stages of creation, from sketches to parades, up to sometimes style the models before their passage on the podium.

His business has become a diversified empire: haute couture, ready-to-wear, accessories, perfumes, furniture with Armani/Casa, and even luxury hotels. Each segment wore the imprint of its refined and refined aesthetic. In 2024, the group achieved more than 2 billion euros in annual turnover, confirming the success of a vision where elegance is conjugated with rigor.

Despite his age, Giorgio Armani remained active until the last months. However, for the first time, he had missed a parade from Milan Fashion Week in June 2025, due to fragile health. A remarkable absence which already suggested the end of an era.

A fiery chapel will be installed in Milan this weekend to allow the public to pay tribute to him. His funeral will take place in private, in accordance with his will.

With its disappearance, Italy and the world lose much more than a fashion designer: a visionary who has redefined contemporary elegance and left a timeless heritage.
