The “Medlink” project, aimed at connecting Tunisia, Algeria and Italy energetically, has been integrated into the European Union’s priority projects. The objective is to develop around 10 GW of renewable energy and storage systems, intended for export and local consumption.

In an update of his list of cross -border projects of renewable energies, The European Commission has granted the “Medlink” project A special status, offering better visibility and eligibility to request subsidies for studies or construction via the mechanism for interconnection in Europe (MIE).

Selection and evaluation

Between September 2024 and January 2025, five new cross -border projects were selected after a call for proposals. Each project was evaluated by external experts, as well as by the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and the Environment (CINEA) and the European Commission, in order to verify their profitability and impact in the field of renewable energies.

To appear on this list, a project must involve at least two EU member states, or a Member State and one or more third countries. In total, 13 renewable energy cross -border projects are now registered as part of the crumb. These projects can also request subsidies within the framework of the Connecting Europe Facility mechanism for finance studies and works.

Content and ambitions of the Medlink project

The project provides:

  • The deployment of 10 GW of solar solar photovoltaic and terrestrial wind turbine in Tunisia and Algeria.
  • The installation of energy storage systems by batteries (BESS) to manage and distribute electricity.
  • The production of 30 TWh/year, intended for local consumption and export to Europe.
  • The creation of 4 GW of new electricity transfer capacities between North Africa and Europe.
  • Carrying out an environmental and social impact study to secure the project.

Climatic and energy objectives

The project aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 8 MTCO₂/year in the EU; to accelerate the energy transition in participating countries; And to strengthen energy interconnection between North Africa and Europe to secure supply and develop renewable energy export.
