Hard blow for the Sfax light metro project

The Minister of Transport, Rachid Amri, revealed, during a plenary session of Parliament on Tuesday, March 25, that the African Development Bank (BAD) had retraced its commitment to finance the Sfax light metro project.

This announcement followed a question from the Saber Mesmoudi deputy.

The minister explained that the AfDB had imposed new conditions for the project, requests that surprised the Tunisian part.

However, he wanted to emphasize that the State will not give up the realization of the project. According to him, the Ministry of Transport is actively working to overcome disputes with the bank and explore new sources of financing to guarantee the continuation of the work.

In his previous statements, the minister had indicated that the project was to start in the first half of 2025, following a BAD financing commitment.

However, with recent developments, the search for alternative solutions is now necessary to ensure the realization of this strategic project for the Sfax region.
