A funding agreement in the form of a donation, an amount of 14.5 million euros, was concluded between Tunisia and Germany to strengthen the country’s adaptation to the effects of climate change. This contract was signed by the Littoral Protection and Development Agency (APAL) and the German Development Bank (KFW).

This fund will be used to develop the “climate adaptation integrated in the Tunisian coastal region” program, aimed at strengthening the resilience of the coastal regions in the face of climatic challenges. It is part of a broader framework for integrated water resources management, in response to the growing impacts of climate change.

According to the German Development Bank, this project is part of Tuniso-German cooperation, a strategic partnership aimed at supporting Tunisia in its transition from climate risks. Funding will extend phases 4 and 5 of the coastal protection program, which mainly works to the fight against coastal erosion. The priority areas include the Bizerte region in particular, as well as the area extending from the south of Sousse to Monastir.

The measures provided for by this program include the implementation of rehabilitation and protection work, in order to limit the effects of elevation of sea level and storm waves, the main causes of marine erosion. This ambitious project aims to preserve the Tunisian coast and improve its ability to resist the negative impacts of climate change.
