Libya facilitates the recovery of funds seized in Tunisia

The Minister of the Interior in the Government of Libyan national unity, Imad Trabelsi, announced a new procedure aimed at allowing Libyan citizens to recover part of their confiscated funds in Tunisia, in particular foreign currencies and other values in violation of exchange on exchange.

In a statement, the ministry said that this initiative is part of the follow -up of the work of the commission responsible for lifting restrictions on the assets and property of Libyan citizens seized abroad. An agreement was reached between the competent authorities of the two countries to facilitate the restitution of the sums concerned.

Thus, the Libyan travelers concerned are invited to go to the official Tunisian customs website in order to fill out an administrative regularization form. According to the ministry, this procedure will allow them to be exempt from the penalties applied so far and to obtain the reimbursement of part of the confiscated amounts.

The Libyan authorities also remind travelers using land and airports the importance of respecting the regulations in force on the transport of currencies and the obligation to declare the amounts transported. This measure aims to guarantee compliance with the laws in force and to prevent new seizures of funds.

This decision echoes the request made by Libya in May 2021, where Tripoli pleaded in favor of foreign exchange for its nationals in violation with Tunisian regulations. At the time, several Libyans had seen their currencies seized at the borders for non-declaration, in accordance with the strict rules of exchange control applied by Tunisia.
