Tunis will partially privatize waste collection

The municipality of Tunis is preparing to cross an important course in waste management. According to the statements of the director of urban hygiene to the municipality of Tunis, Lakhdher Dkheli, made in Mosaic FM on April 11, 2025, a partial privatization project of cleanliness operations is in preparation.

It plans to entrust to private companies the collection and evacuation of almost 30% of the waste produced daily in the capital – or about a third of the quantities collected each day.

Currently, between 650 and 700 tonnes of household waste is collected daily and transported to the Borj Chakir discharge, not to mention the rubble, green waste or the waste generated by markets, cemeteries or construction sites.

The use of the private sector will first concern five districts in the city. The companies responsible for these missions will be selected after validation of the markets by the Higher Commission for Public Procurement. The signing of contracts is scheduled for the coming weeks, for an effective start of operations within one to two months.

This decision to resort to the private sector aims, according to the municipal authorities, to strengthen the efforts of the municipality and to face the growing complexity of waste management in a perpetual expansion capital. Municipal services nevertheless remain mobilized for major cleaning campaigns, especially during national holidays, school exams, or for preparations for the sports bac.
