Strong increase in social movements with 1132 protests in the 1st quarter of 2025

The social climate in Tunisia remains tense. No less than 1132 protest movements were identified during the first three months of 2025, more than double the number recorded during the same period in 2024, which amounted to 475 protests. This is revealed by the last report of the Tunisian Social Observatory (OST), under the Tunisian forum for economic and social rights (FTDES), published this Monday.

According to the report, 53% of mobilizations are linked to professional demands. The demonstrators in particular demand the regularization of the statutes of the workers of public sites, substitute teachers as well as contractual teachers.

The fight against unemployment, in particular that of graduates, is also among the main demands, as is the improvement of working conditions in the public and private sectors.

The majority of protests were initiated by civil servants, workers and unemployed (50%), but also by trade unionists, human rights defenders and students.

These movements have manifested themselves in various spaces, including workplaces, roads, public spaces as well as in court. The forms of mobilization were varied: sit-in, strikes of work and hunger, road blockade or even port of red brassards.

Unsurprisingly, the great Tunis remains the epicenter of protests with 293 actions identified. It is followed by Tataouine (75 movements) and Gafsa (74).
