Tensions broke out last night in Mazzouna, in the governorate of Sidi Bouzid, following the indignation caused by the collapse of a wall in the local high school which cost three students on April 14.

Several people were injured during clashes between demonstrators and the police, including one seriously, requiring an emergency transfer from the local hospital to the regional hospital in Sidi Bouzid.

The TAP agency reports that the protesters blocked the main axes of the city, burned tires and launched projectiles towards the security forces. The latter replied with tear gas shots in order to disperse the crowd, causing cases of asphyxiation among the demonstrators.

These scenes of violence are part of a climate of vivid tension after the tragic accident at the Lycée de Mazzouna, where the collapse of a dilapidated wall also made two injured, currently cared for at the Habib Bourguiba university hospital in Sfax.

The population denounces the state of dilapidation of public infrastructure in the region. The protesters are demanding concrete and immediate measures: the renovation of schools, the upgrading of the local hospital, as well as a global development plan for the Mazzouna delegation, long marginalized.
