The General Directorate of National Security said, in a statement published in the afternoon of Thursday, April 17, 2025, that the information circulating on several pages and sites of social networks, according to which an individual would have immolated himself by fire due to ill-treatment and harassment suffered from police officers under a regional district, are devoid of any basis.
The same source specifies that these “false information” was disseminated by a person who recognized having deliberately propagated these accusations via their personal account on social networks, in order to stir up tensions and to set up public opinion against the police.
After consultation with the public prosecutor, a legal inquiry was opened against the author of the rumor, which was placed in police custody for “use of Internet and Social networks for the dissemination of false news and rumors undermining the rights of others and public security”. The investigation continues.
