In a resounding verdict rendered by the criminal chamber specializing in terrorism affairs, severe prison terms ranging from 13 to 66 years were pronounced against the accused involved in the so -called “conspiracy against state security” in Tunisia.
According to the declarations of the first substitute of the public prosecutor with the judicial center to fight against terrorism, reported by the TAP agency, the judgments aimed at the accused currently in a state of flight were accompanied by the immediate execution, thus reinforcing the firmness of the judicial authorities in this highly publicized case.
The decision was made late at night, after long deliberations, after a complex trial questioning several people, some currently detained since their arrest almost two years ago, and others still sought by justice.
The defendants were found guilty in a graduated manner for very heavy charges, including in particular the conspiracy against the interior security of the State and the membership of a terrorist group.
Among the condemned are known political figures, renowned lawyers, as well as influential businessmen, revealing the extent of a file that has deeply shaken public opinion and aroused in both Tunisia and international reactions.
This case involves 40 accused, 9 of which are currently in detention. Among the accused, Issam Chebbi, secretary general of the Republican Party, Ghazi Chaouachi, politician and former minister, Jawher Ben Mbarek, political activist, Abdelhamid Jelassi, former leader of the Ennahdha movement, as well as the leader of the same movement, Sayed Ferjani.
Also prosecuted in this case, the businessman Kamel Eltaïef, the former deputy Bochra Belhaj Hmida, the activist Chayma Issa and the French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy.
