Mobilization in passing in Tunis in support of Ahmed Souab

A citizen mobilization was held at the start of the evening this Monday, April 21, 2025 in passing, in Tunis, following the arrest of the lawyer and former administrative magistrate Ahmed Souab, arrested in the morning at his home by the police.

According to the statements of the spokesperson for the judicial center to fight terrorism, Me Souab is the subject of an investigation for remarks made in a video released on April 19, in which he mentioned in the Tunisian dialect, in front of the lawyer’s house, criticisms aimed at a magistrate, while mimicking a gesture assimilated to a threat.

The lawyer was placed in police custody for a period of five days, in accordance with the legislation in force in terrorist cases. He can only consult his lawyer at the end of the first 48 hours, as the code of criminal procedure allows in this type of file.

The decision has aroused reactions in legal, political and associative circles. The Ennahdha movement, in a press release, expressed concern about what it describes as “repressive drift” and called for the release of Me Souab, while pleading for the unity of democratic forces in the face of this type of prosecution.

This evening rally brought together lawyers, human rights defenders, political representatives and citizens, all came to express their support for fundamental freedoms and respect for the rights of defense. The event was held in a calm atmosphere.
