More than forty Tunisian organizations and associations have launched an urgent appeal for the immediate release of the lawyer and former magistrate Ahmed Souab, arrested last Monday and presented before the anti -terrorist judicial center for accusations related to terrorism.
In a joint statement published last night, the signatories strongly condemned this arrest calling to “guarantee the law of lawyers to exercise their profession without security and judicial harassment” as well as to “respect for the guarantees of the fair trial and the independence of justice”.
These organizations – including the Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH), the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES), Avocats Sans Frontières, Amnesty International Tunisia, the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) or even the organization against torture and the Tunisian Association of Democrats – denounce what they describe as “a systematic attempt Lawyers, in blatant violation of all the national and international guarantees of the right to defense ”.
The signatories call for “immediate and unconditional liberation” of Professor Ahmed Souab and all detained persons “because of their political positions or their free opinions”.
As a reminder, the public prosecutor at the Tunis Court of Appeal ordered the opening of an investigation against Me Ahmed Souab for a series of accusations relating to terrorism and common law offenses.
