A ceiling collapses at the Lycée de Thibar, the under tension infrastructure

Monday, April 28, 2025, a worrying incident took place at the Lycée de Thibar, located in the governorate of Béja, where the false ceiling of a classroom collapsed. Fortunately, no victim is to be deplored because the room was empty at the time of the incident.

This event, which quickly toured social networks with photos and videos, rekindled concerns about the state of certain school infrastructure in the country. It is far from being the first incident of this type to occur especially when we refer to Mazzouna, where a dilapidated wall of a high school had caused the death of three high school students.

In Thibar, the worst was narrowly avoided, thanks to the vigilance of the director of the school, who had made the decision to close the classroom after having noted signs of structural failure. The latter, in consultation with the regional delegate of education in Béja, also took the precaution of closing other rooms deemed at risk.

The severity of the incident highlights the faults of an education system confronted with dilapidated infrastructure, particularly in certain rural areas.

Another incident that occurred just before, on April 22, 2025, in Sidi Bouzid, also illustrated the fragility of school infrastructure. At El Msabhia primary school in Souk Djedid, two students were injured after the partial collapse of a health block. This drama echoes the Mazzouna incident of April 14.
