60% of the meat comes from clandestine slaughterhouses, alert Brahim Nefzaoui

The Tunisian poultry sector is going through a deep crisis. This is the observation drawn up this Wednesday, April 30, 2025 by Brahim Nefzaoui, president of the National Chamber of Retail of the Poultry, during his intervention today on Jawhara FM.

According to Nefzaoui, the apparent stability of the sector in reality hides serious dysfunctions, in particular a proliferation of clandestine slaughter, a fall in selling prices, and a disengagement from the authorities.

One of the most worrying figures put forward by Nefzaoui concerns the origin of poultry meat in Tunisia. He estimates that almost 60% of the meat currently consumed from clandestine slaughterhouses, thus escaping any health and tax control.

In the official circuits, the price per kilo of chicken currently varies between 7 and 7,300 dinars, a price which is no longer enough to maintain the balance of the sector.

Producers, especially those in the egg sector, sell at a loss. The egg is currently sold between 160 and 180 millimes, while the cost cost is 223 millimes.

The president of the chamber also signals national overproduction, with a surplus of 1,200 tonnes of chicken and 1,208 tonnes of turkey. A situation that could have been anticipated or amortized by better market regulation.

Faced with this situation, professionals in the sector remain on alert. If the prices are currently low, the fear is great to see an outbreak uncontrolled in the coming months, in the absence of an effective supervision policy.
