Tunisia has crossed a new course in the tourism sector. On April 20, 2025, 2,300,250 tourists visited the country, an increase of 8.8% compared to the same period of 2024, according to Mohamed Mehdi Haloui, CEO of the National Office of Tunisian Tourism (ONTT).

This performance is accompanied by a notable increase in tourist revenues, which reached nearly 1.6 billion dinars, recording a gain of 85.3 million dinars compared to the previous year.

Objective: 11 million tourists

Traditional markets continue to increase Tunisian tourism. The number of visitors from Europe experienced a remarkable increase of 24.4%, while the Maghreb market recorded an increase of 4.6%.

Speaking in an interview with the TAP agency, Haloui stressed that the year 2025 promises to be exceptional, with the aim of welcoming nearly 11 million tourists. An ambitious but achievable figure, according to him, especially after a year 2024 already efficient, marked by the arrival of more than 10.26 million visitors.

To achieve these objectives, the ONTT applies a structured strategy around six key axes: the diversification of the offer, the digital transformation, the sustainability, the improvement of quality, the development of training, and the valuation of interior tourism.

This strategy aims in particular to strengthen the image of Tunisia as a competitive destination, to diversify tourist products (seaside, Saharan, cultural, etc.), to promote sustainable tourism, and to simplify procedures for investors and professionals in the sector.

More than 800 hotel units identified

The ONTT also emphasizes the modernization of promotion tools, with an offensive digital strategy and an active presence in international fairs. The objective is to strengthen Tunisia’s visibility in European, Arab, Maghreb and even distant markets.

The quality of the services remains at the center of concerns. Since the beginning of 2025, nearly 1,500 control operations have been carried out in hotels, travel agencies, swimming pools and restaurants. In the event of a serious offense, sanctions up to the temporary closure of the establishments may be pronounced.

Currently, more than 800 hotel units are identified in Tunisia, 670 of which are active.

Mohamed Mehdi Haloui insisted on the importance of close collaboration between the various ministries concerned by tourism activity: interior, transport, environment, health, agriculture … This coordination is essential to ensure quality experience for visitors and guarantee a successful tourist season.

Finally, the figures for the Satellite Tourism Account (CST), published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), show that the direct gross domestic product of tourism reaches 7.3 billion dinars, representing approximately 4.9% of national GDP.
