The Ministry of Communication Technologies, in coordination with the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Tunisia, works at the revision of the international technology card system, in order to increase the annual ceiling. This is what the Minister of Communication Technologies said, Sofiene Hémissi, on the sidelines of a working visit made this Monday in the governorate of Monastir.

The Minister said that this card allows young people and projects to make payments in foreign currency within the limits of a defined ceiling. He stressed that efforts are underway to raise this ceiling, widen the list of beneficiaries and encourage the repatriation of funds. “We have mechanisms in this sense, and the adoption of the new legal framework is in the process of finalization with the government and the central bank,” he said.

Regarding the payment in currencies, the Minister indicated that a fundamental treatment is provided for in the next revision of the exchange code. The latter will also include specific provisions relating to cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.

The promotion of electronic payment is also among the priorities of the government program for the social economy. The objective is to generalize digital payments via bank and postal cards, said Sofiene Hémissi.

At the same time, the Ministry of Communication Technologies intends to improve access to financial services through the increased role of the Tunisian Post. Scenarios are currently being studied, in consultation with the various parties concerned, in particular the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank. One of the scenarios plans the transformation of La Poste into a banking establishment in order to promote the financial inclusion of certain social fringes.
