Tunisian customs services at Tunis-Carthage International Airport managed to thwart an attempted drug trafficking involving a foreign traveler. According to a press release from the Directorate General of Customs, the man, freshly arrived on Tunisian soil, carried 2.5 kilograms of marijuana hidden in carefully hidden sachets inside an isothermal bag intended for food conservation.
Customs agents, alerted by the passenger’s suspicious behavior, have met up careful of his personal effects. It was during the inspection of the cooler that the drug was discovered, distributed in several airtight sachets intended to deceive the vigilance of the controllers and to hide the characteristic smell of this illicit substance.
The individual was immediately arrested, and an investigation was opened in coordination with the competent judicial authorities to determine the origin of the drug, any complicity, as well as the final destination of this cargo. The first elements of the investigation suggest that it could be an organized attempt to bring drugs into Tunisian territory, probably for resale.
This seizure is part of the continuous efforts made by Tunisian customs services to combat drug trafficking through the country’s entry points. Customs also recalls that airports remain highly monitored areas, and that any attempt to introduce prohibited products will be systematically the subject of legal proceedings.
