A few days before Eid Al-Adha, the soaring prices of sheep raises generalized dissatisfaction among Tunisians. During a tour carried out by Mosaique FM in several points of sale, notably at Ariana and in the Mellasin region, many citizens have expressed their fed up in the face of what they consider as unacceptable prices for large layers of the population.
The rise in prices does not seem to spare the so -called “organized” points of sale, where the state has set the price per kilogram of sheep living at 21,900 dinars.
For many buyers questioned, this measure did not produce the expected effect: “There is no difference between the organized points of sale and the others, the prices are high everywhere”, indignant a citizen.
Faced with these criticisms, some breeders and traders defend themselves. According to them, the prices charged in parallel markets are often lower than those of state points of sale, oscillating between 1,700 and 1800 dinars for a beast.
They justify these prices by the continuous increase in the prices of the cattle food and the costs of the breeding, which they have been supporting for several months. In their eyes, the price remains “reasonable” in view of the economic context.
