Tunisia: more than 50,000 civil protection interventions during the summer

Between June 1 and August 21, 2025, the civil protection teams carried out more than 52,000 interventions across the country. Forest fires, road accidents, drowning and securing beaches have marked a particularly intense summer season.

An average of 24 interventions per hour

In an interview with the TAP agency, Commander Khalil Mechri, head of the statistics and operational support for civil protection, said the teams carry out an average of 24 interventions each hour.

Among these are forest and crop fires, road accidents, incidents related to drownings and securing tourism beaches.

One summer marked by fires

The number of forest fires has increased this year with 134 fires having ravaged 2194 hectares, against 106 fires destroying 314 hectares only in 2024 over the same period.

Despite this progression, the official stresses that the figures remain in the averages recorded over the last five years.

Reinforcements to protect harvests

To cope with these risks, civil protection has implemented 16 additional seasonal centers in forest areas (Jendouba, Kef, Béja, Siliana and Bizerte), in support of the 125 permanent units deployed on the territory.

These temporary centers, active until the end of September, made it possible to reduce intervention times and protect nearly 12 million quintals of wheat.

Critical period at the end of July

Between July 23 and 27, 426 fires declared themselves in the forests of Siliana, Zaghouan, Béja, Jendouba and Kasserine. Their mastery required the mobilization of several actors: national army, forest services, Ministry of Equipment, Municipalities, but also Citizens.

Upward accidents, downward drowning

Regarding road safety, civil protection reports a 19% increase in accidents since the start of the summer. Conversely, drowning accidents fell 31%, especially on the beaches in July and August. In total, 322 people were able to be saved from drowning thanks to the rapid action of the teams.

Coastal areas concentrate the majority of interventions due to their high summer frequentation, but the commander Mechri warns: the most deadly road accidents often occur elsewhere, linked to excessive speed and the use of the phone while driving.
