The inflation rate established 5.4 % in May 2025, recording a slight drop compared to April when it amounted to 5.6 %. This slowdown is mainly linked to moderation in the increase in food prices, the increase of which increased from 7.3 % in April to 6.7 % in May.

In annual comparison, food prices increased by 6.7 %. The highest increases were recorded in the fresh vegetables (+25.3 %), fresh fruit (+22.8 %), lamb meat (+19.8 %) and fresh fish (+10.8 %). Conversely, some products have seen their prices retreat, including food oils (-22.2 %) and eggs (-5.1 %).

Over a month, the “Food and Drinks” group experienced an increase of 0.4 %. This development is brought by an increase in the prices of lamb meat (+4.6 %) and fresh fruit (+3.3 %), while poultry and eggs recorded respective decreases of 1.7 %and 6.8 %.

Manufactured and services products: moderate increases

The prices of manufactured products increased by 5.2 %over a year, mainly due to the increase in clothing prices and shoes (+9.4 %) as well as current cleaning products (+4.9 %). For services, the annual increase is 4.6 %, with a marked prices in restaurants, cafes and hotels (+10.8 %).

In monthly variation, clothing prices increased by 0.5 % in May, divided between 0.7 % increase for clothing items and 0.2 % for shoes. The prices of the “Restaurants and Hotels” group also experienced a monthly increase of 0.5 %, stimulated by the 2.3 % increase in accommodation services.

Stable underlying inflation at 5.5 %

The underlying inflation, which excludes food and energy products, remained stable at 5.5 % in May. Free products (not supervised) experienced an annual increase of 6.5 %, compared to 1.6 % for products at supervised prices. In particular, unregulated food products recorded an increase of 7.5 %, while those at controlled prices only increased by 0.9 %.

Sectoral contributions to inflation

The main contributions to overall inflation come from manufactured products (2 %) and fresh food products (2.2 %). As for consumption categories, free food products represented a 1.9 %contribution, while free non -food products weighed for 3.2 %.

Monthly evolution of consumer prices

In May 2025, consumer prices increased by 0.3 % compared to April. This progression is essentially due to the rise in prices in food, clothing and services related to catering and hotel industry.
