Tunisia: only one donor, four lives saved!

A notable advance in the field of organ transplantation in Tunisia. This Wednesday, July 30, 2025, four patients were able to benefit from a vital transplant thanks to the multiple donation of a single donor in a state of brain. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Health, which welcomed the coordinated work of the medical teams involved.

The operations were successfully carried out in four Tunisian hospitals: the Rabta hospital, the Mongi Slim hospital in the Marsa, the Charles Nicolle hospital in Tunis and the Fattouma Bourguiba hospital in Monastir, under the supervision of the National Center for the promotion of organ transplantation (CNPTO).

This type of intervention, rare but highly symbolic, underlines the importance of organ donation and the essential role of coordination between hospitals. In Tunisia, although the laws authorize and supervise organ donation, in particular through Law No. 91-22 of March 25, 1991, practice remains limited by several brakes: cultural reluctance, lack of awareness, and weakness of the declarations of consent.

The health authorities regularly call on citizens to express their desire to give their organs after death, by registering in the official registers or by carrying a donor card. The case of this single donor, which has saved four lives, is a powerful example of the human and medical impact of organ donation.

This success could give new impetus to the national post-mortem donation strategy, in particular by strengthening communication around brain death as a valid medical condition for levy.
