The defense of Rached Ghannouchi, former president of the dissolved Tunisian Parliament and historic leader of the Ennahdha movement, announced that the latter began a “symbolic” hunger strike in solidarity with the Palestinian people of Gaza.
According to a press release published this Friday August 1st, this initiative responds to the call launched by several factions of the Palestinian resistance to intensify international pressure in order to lift the blockade of Gaza and end the “extermination war” led by Israel.
“The defense of Rached Ghannouchi informs the national and international public opinion of his entry these days in a solidarity hunger strike, in response to the call of the factions of the Palestinian resistance to put pressure on the siege on Gaza and to stop the war of genocide and famine against the noble people of Gaza,” said the press release.
Rached Ghannouchi, 83, has been incarcerated since April 17, 2023, after being arrested at his home in Tunis.
He was sentenced in 2023 to one year in prison for “apology for terrorism”, in a case linked to a public declaration, but he is also prosecuted in several other files.
His supporters consider his detention as a political and denounce “judicial harassment”.
