Tunisia: Kaïs Saïed calls for a global and equitable reform of the education system

The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, chaired, in the afternoon of Monday August 4, 2025 at the Palais de Carthage, a meeting bringing together Nourredine Nouri, Minister of Education, Mondher Belaïd, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Riadh Chooud, Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, Sadok Mourali, Minister of Youth and Sports, Ahmed Bouhali, Minister of Affairs Nuns, Asma Jebari, Minister of Family, Women, Childhood and Elderly, as well as Amina Srarfi, Minister of Cultural Affairs.

The President of the Republic underlined, at the beginning of this meeting, the importance of the reform of the education system, recalling that the inscription in the constitution of the creation of the Higher Education Council is in no way fortuitous. This choice, validated by the people, stems from a deep conviction: among the most crucial reforms, even among the most decisive fronts in the struggle for national liberation, is the front of education and teaching.

He recalled the many stages that Tunisia has known in the field of teaching reform since the second half of the 19th century, affirming that no future is possible for a people without a national education system, accessible to all and guaranteeing equality.

He also insisted that no reform can meet the expectations of the Tunisian people if they are not global and does not cover all the stages of the educational journey, without isolating one at the expense of others as has been the case before. He warned that no error is permitted in this civilizational project, because any failure could have lasting consequences, difficult to repair, depriving whole generations of access to knowledge and employment.

The Head of State added that several past choices have not only generated victims – which it is the duty of the State to support in order to put an end to their suffering – but also dug inequalities that a real revolution of rectification must come to abolish.

He has finally insisted on the need, now, to ensure that the choices in educational matters are part of this logic of recovery, because many of them, so far, do not come up.
