The incident on Thursday in front of the headquarters of the Tunisian Labor Union (UGTT) sparked a wave of convictions from several political parties and civil society organizations.

Dozens of people gathered in front of the UGTT headquarterschanting hostile slogans calling for the dissolution of the union center. The trade unionists, for their part, trained a human chain to prevent intrusion into the building. The UGTT qualified this attempt to attack “attack” and “crime”.

According to a TAP press releasethe parties and organizations indicated that the demonstrators were supporters of the “July 25 process” or from the faithful to the power in place. They believe that this attack is part of a context of increasing restrictions imposed by the power in place, aimed at hindering union work and interrupting negotiations with unions.

Reactions of political parties and organizations

  • The Soumoud Coalition Qualified this attack as “dangerous development” which stifles the climate of freedom and aims for a historical national organization. The coalition called for a serious and transparent investigation so that the managers are careful. It also reminded the State its responsibility to protect the seats from organizations and parties.
  • The Party of Unified Democratic Patriots (PPDU) saw in this incident a serious episode in the growing provocation campaign against union work. He called to thwart all attempts to affect union rights and strengthen union unit to cope with future challenges.
  • The National Salvation Front condemned the act of sedition and expressed his total solidarity with the UGTT. He considered assault against political and civil forces as a threat to the foundations of democratic life.
  • The Tunisian network of rights and freedoms denounced the “systematic” attack against the UGTT. He called for the opening of an investigation and demanded that those responsible for incentives for violence be brought to justice.

Following these events, the UGTT executive office called on the public prosecutor to open an investigation into “aggression”, “defamation” and “incentive to violence” against its organization.
