The Tunisian Labor Union (UGTT) announced this Saturday, August 9, 2025 on its Facebook page on Saturday, 2025 on its meeting of its national executive office scheduled for this Monday, August 11 at the headquarters of the organization.
This invitation comes in a tense social context marked by the cancellation of social conciliation sessions which were to be held on August 5 and 6, a decision qualified as “serious preceding” by Salah Eddine Salmi, deputy secretary general of the UGTT. This cancellation deeply affected social relations in Tunisia, questioning the dialogue between the different stakeholders.
In addition, the meeting follows the protests that occurred last Thursday in place Mohamed Ali, where groups of demonstrators expressed their dissatisfaction against the union management, going so far as to claim the dissolution of the union center. This challenge reflects an important internal fracture and raises serious questions about the legitimacy and governance of the UGTT.
Faced with these tensions, the meeting of the National Executive Office will be a decisive moment for the Central Union. It will not only have to clarify its position in the face of the cancellation of social negotiations but also define a strategy to respond to internal criticism and appease the crisis.
In this context, the President of the Kaïs Saïed republic reaffirmed, during a meeting with the head of the Sarah Zaafrani Zenzri government, the role of the police in the protection of the UGTT siege during the demonstrations, while refuting rumors evoking a desire to assault on the part of the protesters.
