The objective is clear: to reduce alcohol -related accidents. Faster and effective controls
Major Samia Massoud, acting head of the road communication service at the National Road Safety Observatory, explained in a declaration to the TAP agency, which this reform would also allow the Ministry of the Interior to install the measures of the alcohol rate in the blood directly on the ground. The police would no longer need to use laboratory analyzes. This device would strengthen deterrence and reduce dangerous behavior while driving.
Current rules and sanctions
Today, the legal limit is set at 0.3 gram of pure alcohol per liter of blood. Beyond that, the driver is in violation. The decree, already amended in 2016, provides for a fine of 200 to 500 dinars, a prison sentence of up to six months or the withdrawal of the driving license.
Road mortality up
This initiative comes as Tunisian roads become more deadly. From January 1 to July 29, 2025, 663 people lost their lives, an increase of 6.8 % compared to 2024. However, the number of accidents fell, going from 3,428 to 2,863 over the same period. The number of injured also fell back, from 4,623 to 3,781, a decrease of 18.2 %.
