MP Chokri El Bahri strongly criticized the hunt for stray dogs in Tunisia. According to him, this method, used for over fifty years, is a real “crime” and has never made it possible to solve this problem.
Several municipalities favor the slaughter of stray dogs, for easier. However, this approach in no way reduces their number. “Hunting only perpetuates the phenomenon,” he said. Rather, it recommends vaccination, sterilization and creation of reception centers, as well as regular cleaning of the dumps.
This Monday, August 11, during a telephone intervention on Mosaic FM, Chokri El Bahri recalled that a bill, submitted in July 2024, now prohibited municipalities from using the hunting of stray dogs. This text aims to encourage alternatives respectful of animals and to improve cohabitation between humans and animals.
While the question remains sensitive in Tunisia, this intervention underlines the urgency of adopting more responsible and sustainable measures. It is time to give up cruel methods that do not bring any lasting solution.
These words echo a recent case. The Sousse 1 prosecution had opened an investigation after a violent assault against a dog in Zouia. The alleged perpetrator, a shepherd, is in police custody. The dog succumbed to his serious injuries, including total paralysis and bleeding in the eyes.
