An important union demonstration was held this Thursday, August 21, 2025, from Place Mohamed Ali in the direction of Avenue Habib Bourguiba, at the call of the Tunisian Labor Union (UGTT). The rally was organized in response to what the power plant described as a “attack on the union’s house” and attempt to “sabotage social dialogue” in Tunisia.
Taboubi voice
In front of a crowd of activists, the secretary general of the UGTT, Noureddine Taboubi, denounced the questioning of the organization in the current crisis.
“Having the Union brought responsibility for the situation in the country is a maneuver that will be used for nothing except to accentuate social asphyxiation and tension,” he said.
He insisted on the need to review public policies, relaunch social consultation and guarantee the right to collective negotiation.
Taboubi also said that the UGTT “believes in complementarity between the national and social role”, while defending the rights of workers, freedoms and the rule of law.
A crisis fueled by strikes
This protest day is part of a context marked by a series of social movements initiated by the UGTT in recent weeks. Among them, a general three -day public transport strike, which would have recorded a participation rate of 100 %.
At the same time, the power plant has multiplied the calls for the reopening of social dialogue with the government, denouncing the campaigns of “demonization and marginalization” of which it claims to be a victim.
Back on the August 7 attack
The climate of tension was exacerbated by the attack against the siege of the UGTT on August 7, when individuals gathered in front of Place Mohamed Ali, accusing the corruption power station and calling for “purification”. Taboubi described this act as “serious and dangerous”, calling for justice to be done.
“To defend the Hached fortress is to defend a bastion of Tunisia,” he concluded, recalling the historic role of the union in national life.
