Powerful explosions rocked this Tuesday, August 4, 2020, the port of Beirut killed 73 people and nearly 3,700 injured according to a still provisional assessment reported by the Lebanese Minister of Health.
These violent explosions that have shaken the capital could be due to “highly flammable materials” confiscated and stored in a warehouse “for years”, a senior security official said on Tuesday.
“It seems that there is a warehouse containing matters confiscated for years, and it would seem that these were very explosive matters,” said Abbas Ibrahim, director general of general security, interviewed by televisions.
The double explosion took place around 5:10 p.m., near the port, decimating almost all buildings around and causing several dead and injured.
One day of national mourning Wednesday August 5 was declared by the Prime Minister.
