The two gigantic explosions that devastated entire districts of the Lebanese capital left at least 100 dead and more than 4,000 injured, the Lebanese Red Cross said on Wednesday.
“So far, more than 4,000 people have been injured and more than 100 have been killed. Our teams are continuing their research and rescue operations in the surrounding areas, ”added the organization in a statement.
2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate
In addition, these violent explosions that have shaken the capital could be due to “highly flammable matters” confiscated and stored in a “for years” warehouse, a senior security official on Tuesday.
About 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were stored in the warehouse of the port of Beirut also confirmed and denounced Prime Minister Hassan Diab.
“It is unacceptable that an ammonium nitrate cargo, estimated at 2,750 tonnes, for six years in a warehouse, without precautionary measures. It is unacceptable and we cannot be silent about this issue, “said the Prime Minister during the meeting of the Superior Defense Council, according to remarks reported by a spokesperson at a press conference.
The double explosion took place around 5:10 p.m., near the port, decimating almost all buildings around and causing several dead and injured.
One day of national mourning Wednesday August 5 was declared by the Lebanese Prime Minister.
For his part, Kaïs Saïed, President of the Republic sent a letter of solidarity and condolences to the name of the Tunisian people in which Tunisia expressed its total solidarity with Lebanon and its wishes for a rapid recovery of the wounded.
