After several years of armed conflict, the government of GNA and the elected Parliament announced a common ceasefire throughout the Libyan territory.

Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the presidential council of the government of National Union (GNA), based in Tripoli and recognized by the UN announced, this Friday, August 21, 2020, an immediate cease-fire and the suspension of all military operations in all Libyan territories, reports Sky News.

In the same press release, the GNA called for presidential and parliamentary elections in March 2021, with the agreement of all the Libyan parties, stressing that the current cease-fire requires that Syrte and Al-Jufrah be demilitarized.

He stressed that the ultimate goal “is the restoration of full sovereignty on Libyan soil and the exit of foreign forces and mercenaries”.

For its part, Aguila Saleh, president of the elected Parliament, based in the east of the country, announced the holding of elections soon and ordered all parties to observe “an immediate ceasefire and the stop of all fights throughout the Libyan territory”, in a separate press release.

The Libyan parliament considered that the ceasefire “will lead to the dismantling of the militias and will stop the foreign interference”.

This double announcement fixing the organization of elections soon and the cessation of all fighting on the territory was welcomed by the UN.
