Tunisia welcomes, from Monday, November 9, 2020, the Libyan political dialogue forum, held under the slogan “La Libya first”. A crucial and expected meeting to achieve reconciliation between the different parties and develop a roadmap for elections.
In total, 75 participants representing 13 Libyan factions will take part in this event: members of the Tobrouk Parliament, members of the High Council of State and the participants selected by the UN.
“Elections must be the ultimate goal here. We need a clear roadmap towards the elections in order to impose legitimacy of the various institutions, “said Stephanie Williams, an acting special representative of the United Nations Secretary General and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
During a press conference held yesterday Sunday in Tunis, she said she was “optimistic” for talks who represent “a unique opportunity” and called on participants to be ready to make concessions for the good of Libya.
Last month, an agreement on a national and permanent ceasefire was found between the government of national understanding (Gen), in place in Tripoli and recognized by the international community, and the Libyan National Army (ANL) of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, strong man in eastern Libyan. The next step would be election.
