As in Wimbledon, Ons Jabeur missed out on his Grand Chelem final of the US Open. However, if, in English, our champion released a monstrous first set, she never really entered her final in New York.
After only eight minutes, Iga Swiatek already led three games to zero. Ons multiple direct faults and seems very tense. These first three jets set the tone for what this final will be. The only burst of Ons pride does not last more than five minutes where it manages to break the world number 1 and return to 3 games for two.
After this return from the Tunisian, Swiatek further increases her level of play and continues six games in a row to win the first set and lead 3 to 0 in the second. The public begins to encourage Ons in the hope of seeing a more disputed match and for longer. As in the first set, ons returns to 3-2 then 4-4 and 5-5. She will never pass in front of the score and the two players compete for a tie-break that the ones will lose 7-5 after having led 4-5.
Despite a few rare shots, Ons Jabeur bowed two sets to zero (6-2, 7-6) and lets the Polish win her second Grand Slam title of the year 2022.
Let us recall that in New York, Ons Jabeur reached the final by successively eliminating three Americans, Madisson Brengle (63rd in the world), Elizabeth Mandlik (144th) and Shelby Rogers (31st) and the Russian Veronika Kudermeto (18th) in the round of 16, which she beat in two sets (7-6, 6-4).
In the quarter-finals, she beat in two sets (6-4, 7-6) the formidable Australian, Ajla Tomljanović by being simply stronger, more realistic and more twirling, holding her match from start to finish and showing a lot of solidity.
In the semi-finals, Ons Jabeur laminated the French Caroline Garcia in two sets (6-1, 6-3) in 1h06, making, too, proof of a lot of concentration, precision, envy, and mastery.
