The pandemic caused by the coronavirus will not be the last and attempts to improve human health are “dedicated to failure” if one does not attack climate change and animal welfare, estimates the boss of the World Health Organization (WHO).
The director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has insurgent against the “dangerously myopic” gear which consists in spending money when torches an epidemic but doing nothing to prepare for the next one.
In a striking video message on Sunday, December 27, 2020, the first international day of preparation for epidemics he wanted to recall that it was time to learn from the Cavid-19 pandemic.
“For too long, the world worked according to a cycle of panic and negligence,” he said. “We throw money on an epidemic and when it is finished, we forget it and do nothing to prevent the next one.
The first annual report of the Global PREPAREDNES MONITORING BOARD in September 2019 on the state of preparation of the planet in health emergencies, made public a few months before the appearance of the new coronavirus, stressed that the planet was terribly misunderstood for potentially devastating pandemics.
“History tells us that it will not be the last pandemic and epidemics are a reality of life,” said Ghebreyesus in his message. “The pandemic highlighted the intimate links between the health of humans, animals and the planet,” he added, reporting that the coronavirus crisis should not have been a surprise, given the repeated warnings.
