Scenes that shocked the world.
The Capitol, symbol of American democracy, was invaded by pro-Trump activists who interrupted the session dedicated to the confirmation of the victory of Joe Biden.
According to the US Capitol Historical Society, this is the first time that the Capitol has been invaded since the building was burnt down by British troops in 1814.
Four people died, including a woman, pro-Trump, who was shot dead and three others who lost their lives from a “medical emergency”, reports CNN.
After hours of dread, the session resumed under high tension. “The Senate will not be intimidated by thugs, crowds or threats. We will not give in to anarchy or intimidation,” said the head of the Republican majority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell.
