Amnesty International has summoned the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, to compensate immigrant workers who built the stadiums of the World Cup in Qatar.
In a platform published this Friday, November 11, 2022, in the French daily Le Monde, Amnesty International reiterated its request already made, jointly with 24 other NGOs, last May.
NGOs claim that many foreign workers, mainly from South and Southeast Asia, as well as Africa, have been exploited and mistreated.
Workers complained about poor working conditions ranging from forced labor during the hours done but not paid, including insufficient number of rest days.
Some sponsors of the World Cup like Adidas, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s made the first call, and the Australian football team denounced in a video the mistreatment of the workers who have built or renovated the eight stadiums where the World Cup will take place.
