The UN Security Council met yesterday Monday, May 11 emergency on violence in Jerusalem, but without agreeing on a joint declaration.
It was the United States that refused the adoption of a statement saying that a “public message was not appropriate at this stage”, according to diplomats.
At the end of new consultations in the afternoon on the possibility of publishing a common text calling for a de-escalation, several diplomats told the AFP agency that there should not be on Monday.
In the morning, the United States had explained to its 14 council partners, during a videoconference held behind closed doors, “working behind the scenes” to appease the situation and “not be sure that at this stage a declaration would help”.
Tunisia, Arab member of the Security Council had requested a meeting of the Security Council and in coordination with the Palestinian Party and the support of China, current president of the Council, Norway, Ireland, Vietnam, Saint-Vincent-et-les Grenadines and Niger.
