Tunisia has submitted to the UN Security Council a resolution project calling for the Ethiopian government to stop the second filling of the Renaissance dam.
Egypt, which depends on the Nile for around 97% of its irrigation and its drinking water, considers the dam as a threat to its water supply. For its part, Sudan fears that its own dams will be damaged if Ethiopia is filling.
For its part, Ethiopia claims that the hydroelectric energy produced by the dam will be vital to meet the energy needs of its 110 million inhabitants. The two countries downstream from the dam have urged Ethiopia not to fill up before signing an agreement.
Tunisia, with its draft resolution, provides that the Security Council asks Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan to resume their negotiations at the request of the President of the African Union and the Secretary General of the United Nations. He also orders the three countries to reach, within six months, to a binding agreement concerning the filling and management of the dam.
