Former Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika died on Friday at the age of 84. “Death of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika,” Algerian television said a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.

Bouteflika, born March 2, 1937, died at “10 pm (9 pm GMT) at his place of residence”, according to the private channel El Hayet TV.

Since his fall in power in 2019 under pressure from the army and the street, Bouteflika had remained entrenched in his medical residence in Zeralda, west of Algiers, while his relatives were prosecuted for accusations of corruption.

A major figure in independence, the former Algerian head of state, a symbol of sclerotic power had indeed been forced to leave power following the Harak, an Algerian protest movement having ended the reign of “Boutef”.
