Algeria will no longer go through Morocco to export its gas to Spain

The diplomatic crisis between Algeria and Morocco takes new forms. According to the Reuters agency, Algeria should not renew the contract of the Maghreb-Europe (GME) gas pipeline with Morocco which ends on October 31.

The agency quotes “three sources with direct knowledge of the file: two government and one within Sonatrach”, saying that this is ignoring the will of the Moroccan authorities who wished, last summer, see the contract with renewed Algeria.

Thus, Algerian gas deliveries to Spain will be made exclusively via the MEDGAZ submarine gas pipeline, after Algiers’ decision.

“Algeria, through the Sonatrach company, will honor its commitments with Spain relating to the supply of natural gas and is ready to discuss the conditions of additional gas deliveries,” said an Algerian government source.

The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Laamamra, had announced, in August last, that Algeria decided to break diplomatic relations with Morocco.

The announcement of this measure intervened at a press conference organized by the Minister who explained that “the decision to break relations will not harm the Algerian and Moroccan citizens residing in the two countries”.

The Algerian diplomat also accused Morocco of having committed “inamicial and hostile acts” against Algeria.
