Facebook changes its name. From now on, it will no longer be necessary to call it “Facebook”, but “Meta”, at least when it is mentioned as a social network.
The announcement was made this Thursday, October 28, 2021 during the annual Facebook Connect conference by Mark Zuckerberg, the latter believing that the Facebook term was too linked to that of the platform of the same name, launched in 2004.
For Facebook users as a social network, nothing changes since this evolution only concerns the name of the parent company, which also has Instagram, Whatsapp, Messenger, or even Oculus virtual reality headsets.
According to Zuckerberg, the term “meta” signifying in Greek “beyond”, echoes Facebook’s wish to go towards the “Metals”, a direct reference to the future that Facebook wishes to build, based on the virtual world that can be visited using augmented or virtual reality glasses.
