Morocco qualified for the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time in its history. The Atlas Lions eliminated Spain after a penalty shootout (0-0, 3-0 at TAB)
The AS of the Atlas in the quarterfinals are historic. Indeed, the Moroccans achieved the feat of finishing first in their group, which counted Belgium, Croatia and Canada. Opposed to Spain, they never trembled.
The Moroccans even obtained three big opportunities at the end of the game to fold the match. But ultimately the shots on goal succeeded.
Dominating, Spain has been ineffective for its part despite its 76% possession.
Abdelhamid Sabiri, Hakim Ziyech and especially Achraf Hakimi – who succeeded in a daring Panenka – allowed Morocco to join the next round while Badr Benoun, third shooter, missed his attempt,
On the Spanish side, neither Pablo Sarabia, Neither Carlos Soler, nor Sergio Busquets managed to deceive Yassine Bounou, the Moroccan porter.
Morocco is doing better than in 1986 when it was eliminated by the FRG in the round of 16 following a goal collected at the end of the match and became the first Arab and fourth African selection to access the quarter -finals of a World Cup.
In the quarterfinals, Morocco will face the winner of the round of 16 on Saturday which will oppose Portugal to Switzerland this evening.
