Detected in Cyprus, “Deltacron”, a variant combining Delta and Omicron

“There are currently co-infections Omicron and Delta and we have found this strain which is a combination of the two,” said a Cypriot teacher who thinks he has discovered a new Covid-19 strain, which mixes Delta and Omicron variants.

As Cyprus Mail reports, this new variant which shares the genetic background of the Delta variant with some of the mutations of omicron, justifies the new appellation, “Deltacron”.

While the WHO has not communicated anything in this regard, the team that has made the discovery claims that “the relative frequency of changes is higher in hospitalized patients, which could mean that there is a correlation between Deltacron and hospitalizations”.

“We will see in the future if this strain is more pathological or more contagious or if it will prevail over Delta and Omicron,” it was said.
