After Google, it is WikiLeaks’s turn to join the English dictionary. Global Language Monitor (GLM) said that the Wikileaks site, which has released thousands of confidential documents from the US government, was mentioned by so many people that it sufficiently meets the propagation, depth and magnitude criteria to be added to the dictionary.
“Wikileaks joins a number of new hi-tech media and companies whose names and features are integrated into the language,” said Paul JJ Payack, leader to the Global Language Monitor (GLM). “These include Googler, Twitter and Facebook’s” Friending “functionality. »»
GLM’s research shows that the word appeared the first time in international media in 2006. It was cited more than 300 million times. Payack says that as a simple word, Wikileaks can be written without “W” or “L” uppercase, but to refer to the site, the spelling remains Wikileaks. It is similar to the word Google when used as a verb “Googler”, which means “to search for a subject on Google”. For the meaning of the Wikileaks word, GLM explained that Wiki means “quickly” and leaks means “leaks” in English. Which gives the fast leaks.
For information, for a word to be introduced into the English dictionary, it must have been used more than 25,000 times in the English -speaking media, which is the case for Wikileaks.
