The UN General Assembly suspended, this Thursday, April 7, 2022, Russia from its headquarters to the United Nations Human Rights Council due to the invasion of Ukraine, during a vote which collected 93 favorable votes.
Of the 193 member countries of the General Assembly, 24 voted against this suspension, initiated by the United States. 58 countries, including Tunisia, abstained, but abstentions were not taken into account in the majority of two-thirds required among the only votes for and against.
This is the second suspension of the history of the UN after that of Libya in 2011.
Russia quickly reacted to this suspension. His Ministry of Foreign Affairs described him as illegal, in a statement published this evening. Russia denounces a decision aimed at ostentatiously punishing a sovereign Member State of the United Nations which carries out an independent internal and foreign policy, according to the said press release.
